Dan Cotter Dan Cotter is president of DMCotter Research & Strategy, Inc. and its Suburban Focus Group division. The depth and breadth of Mr. Cotter's experience is at your service, as he personally oversees the day-to-day activities of the company. In recent years, Mr. Cotter has served as Chief Operating Officer of the well-known media research and consulting firm Urban & Associates, Inc. At U&A and throughout his 25 year career, Mr. Cotter has used quantitative and qualitative research to help newspapers, magazines, websites and other clients build strategies to successfully “invent” new products, reposition existing ones, and compete more effectively for customers.

Even prior to joining U&A, Mr. Cotter spent 20 years as one of the top research and marketing professionals in the newspaper industry. He worked for many years within the renowned Pulitzer Publishing Company, and, in addition to being its leading researcher, he held two major positions at the corporate level: Director of Newspaper Strategic Planning (with responsibility for research, acquisitions, and product development) and Vice President of Marketing for its community newspaper division (with responsibility for improving news, circulation and advertising performance at all the Pulitzer properties). In his career, Mr. Cotter also served as Publisher of the Santa Maria (CA) Times, VP/Circulation Director for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, VP/Circulation Director for the Daily Southtown (Chicago, IL) and Marketing/Research Director for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

He holds an MS degree in Communication from Illinois State University, and he taught for many years as an adjunct professor at Washington University. He is the recipient of a number of prestigious industry awards for his work in newspaper research and marketing, including numerous Editor & Publisher/INMA awards and national EFFIEs and ADDYs for his promotional campaigns, and the Newspaper Research Council's highest honor, the Gerold Zarwell Award in 1990.

Mr. Cotter is considered an expert in research and marketing, and he's written numerous articles on these subjects that have been featured in the newspaper industry trade press.

Patrick Cotter Patrick J. Cotter
Mr. Cotter is currently a Partner in the white-collar criminal defense practice of one of the nation's foremost law firms, Arnstein & Lehr. Previously, he has worked as an Assistant United States Attorney in New York. Mr. Cotter has substantial experience handling a wide range of matters in the area of criminal defense, including actions under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), tax matters, internal corporate investigations, appellate and post-conviction work and international criminal law. He has taught criminal law related courses as a full-time faculty member and as an Adjunct Professor at the Chicago-Kent College of Law, Loyola University School of Law, the University of Montana School of Law and University College Cork, Ireland, Law Department. He has also guest lectured at the University of Chicago School of Law, DePaul University School of Law, and various law schools in Ireland.

Mr. Cotter received the United States Attorney General's Distinguished Service Award for his work as a trial prosecutor, as well as other awards and citations. In 1992-93, Mr. Cotter was a consultant to the United Nations Special Rapporteur investigating allegations of war crimes in the former Yugoslavia. He has since been appointed by the International Tribunal on the former Yugoslavia to its Panel of Appointed Counsel. He is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys and the American Bar Association and its Sections on Criminal Law and International Criminal Law.

Mr. Cotter is the author of "Prosecution of Rape and Other Gender-Based Violence Before the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia," 5:2 Hast. W.L.J. 171 (1994) and "Organized Crime in America; Its Development and the Law's Response," 1 Town and Gown 3 (1994) (University College Cork Press). In addition, he is one of the authors of the "Criminal Law" column in the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin. Mr. Cotter has also appeared as a legal commentator on numerous television and radio programs including "Nightline," National Public Radio, Court TV and A&E's "American Justice." His commentary has appeared in newspapers around the country.
